A New Group of People

Many people know that I spend three mornings a week at the local soup kitchen. I help get the meals ready that are delivered to the homebound people. I also help get the lunch service ready for those who come in to eat. I have been doing this for almost four years now. In those four years, I have met some great, and not so great, people both on the service side and the being served side.

I love doing this job. I love knowing that I am helping someone who otherwise would be going hungry that day. I love talking to the people who come in to eat. I love getting to know the people and hearing not only how they got to be where they are, but their dreams of for what they hope they can be in the future.

Until today I had stayed in the building working. Today was different. I went out with one of our drivers to deliver meals today. It was a unique but fun experience.

The people who come in to eat are usually homeless of all ages. Those that we deliver to are mostly senior citizens or handicapped who are unable to come in for lunch. Seeing the way the people stuck at home are and how grateful they are for that day’s meal, makes doing my job even better. It shows me how much the Meals on Wheels program is needed in this country and what a huge loss it would be if it was cut.

I think EVERY person should go into a soup kitchen and serve at least one meal. EVERY person should also go on one delivery route with a Meals on Wheels driver. The opinions of a lot of these people who do not think they are necessary services would change if they only saw how important these meals are to these people.

Take three single men and put them in a house with three single women and leave them alone. Surely they can leave each other alone, right?  NO! That bush outside has been getting a LOT of use. One of the girls has been in the bush with all three of the men. One of the girls has been in the bush with two of the men. The two girls still alive have been in the bush together. The man who has been in the bush with only one of the alive women has been in the bush with Ghost Veronica.

It was only a matter of time before THIS happened.

Meet Ellen and “I Don’t Remember His Name.” They are NOT twins. They have different mothers and different fathers.

These are Ellen’s parents.

These are “I Don’t Remember His Name”‘s parents.

Woohoo isn’t the only thing that has been going on around the house though. People are still setting themselves on fire.

They have had a visitor also.

This tiny house experiment has been pretty entertaining. Tempers are flaring.

SO are the people.

The group did finally earn their first upgrade to the house. Now most of them have beds. It is still first come, first serve though.

We are also down to only five people in the house.

Veronica didn’t catch on fire, which surprised me. I found her urn in the house. Unfortunately I have no clue how she died. I was busy watching a live stream on my iPad when it happened.

Today the Angels Cried

For four hours today I spent my time watching a live stream with 500+ people I had never met. For four hours today I spent my time watching a live stream of hundreds of people crowded into a building. For four hours today I spent my time watching a live stream that broke my heart. If I knew that it was going to make me spend four hours crying, would I watch it again? Damn right I would! So what was this live stream that I spent so long crying over? It was the funeral for Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric DiSario.

This man was not only a police chief. He was also a father of six children with another on the way. He was a son. He was a brother. He was an uncle. He was a husband. He was a friend.

He was a man that saved lives the day that he lost his.  Yes two others died after he did, but it was his response that allowed other officers to arrive at the scene and end the situation as quickly as they did.

The rain held off while everybody was inside the church. Once he was in the hearse and on his way to the cemetery behind the police escort, the sky opened up with thunder and a heavy downpour. That did not stop people from lining the road from the church to the cemetery to honor our fallen hero. Men, women, and children of all ages stood in the rain to pay their respects as he passed them by. After a few minutes, the rain let up. Once the hearse reached the cemetery gates, the sky opened up once again, even harder than it had before. The rain persisted for several more minutes before letting up. Now it is raining again.

Today he was laid to rest. Today the community said their final goodbyes. Today the dispatcher placed one “last call” to Police Chief DiSario. Today his wife and children said goodbye to their husband and father.

Today the angels cried. Tomorrow the angels rejoice as his wife brings his beautiful daughter into the world.

If you have never heard a Last Dispatch Call for a fallen police officer or fire fighter, please go to YouTube or google and listen. It is heartbreaking to listen to when you realize the symbolism of that call.

R.I.P. Police Chief Steven Eric DiSario. You have answered your last call.

Tiny House, Big Family

I was starting to get bored with the Mendenhalls, so I decided to take a break from them for the rest of the night and do something fun with the game.  Here is what I did:

I created one small home. When I say small, I’m talking a 4×4 house.  Inside is a single bed, a table, two chairs, two counters, a sink, a microwave, a shower, and a toilet. Outside is a small grill. Sound like a good starter place for a single person, right? That would be too easy.

Let’s meet who I have moved in.

Things have been interesting with this group already and I’ve only played with them about ten minutes.

I haven’t left the Mendenhalls behind. I am going to go back and forth between the two in order to keep myself from getting bored. This particular group is going to be on auto play. I made them, I made their house. I’ll expand it by another 4×4 block each time they reach $10,000. Otherwise I am leaving them alone to do their thing while I set back and laugh at the chaos.

Growing Pains

Making the money for the next renovation to the house has been slow. Well it was. We decided to spend some of the money we had been saving to get a computer. That was the best decision we could have made.

I started out just writing a couple books. That didn’t pay as well as I had hoped it would.

We did find a way to use the computer to make some money. It is not exactly legal so we won’t tell you what it is. The less you know the better.

We did finally get enough to expand the house.

The timing could not have been better either. It seems the house is not the only thing growing.

The pregnancy and labor went great. Bryon was has been wonderful and as excited as I was about meeting our little angel.

The day Rebecca was born, was even better than the day we learned she was on the way.

Elsa and Madeline are both pregnant also. The family is finally getting past all of the rough times and growing again.
